Seven years after construction began, the
Twin Towers were finally
ready.  Although most people were
impressed by the
accomplishment, there were people who
diddn't care for it real well,
especially among the press, which began
firing off very negative
comments about the buildings.  Among
them, New Yorker critic
Lewis Mumford labeled the buildings as
examples of "purposeless
gigantism and technological exhibitionism.
On May 26, 1977,
workers arrived late to work as they
watched mountain climber
George Willig scale the walls of the World
Trade Center.  That wasn't
the craziest stunt pulled off.
In 1974, Philippe Petite walked between
the Twin Towers on a tightrope 1,350
feet in the air, pausing now
and then to do a stunt or two.  When
the movie King Kong was
remade, the scene was shifted to the
World Trade Center, where the
beast came crashing down onto the
plaza.
The World Trade Center
had an observation deck in Tower 2. (the tower without the antenna)
It featured 360 degree viewing.  If you wanted an extra thrill, you
could go on top of Tower 2 to get a real bird's eye view of New
York.  In Tower 1, you could eat the World Trade Center
Restaurant  In 1993, a car bomb blew up under the World Trade
Center.  But that was nothing compared to what would happen 8
years later.
Before moving ahead to the destruction, here are some more photos of
it's life.
