Information about Jawas:

Jawas are small, rodentlike people who live on the Planet Tatooine, the harsh desert world that is the home planet of Anakin and Luke Skywalker. Under their full-body robes they are small creatures, with shrunken faces and yellow eyes. Each Jawa is about a meter tall, with tiny flexible hands and feet. Though they may have evolved from rodents, scientists believe they progressed to stand upright by raching for lichens and fungi that grow on underground cave walls. For their nourishment, Jawas aquire water by inserting long, thin hoses down the stems of the funnel flower, a flora native to Tatooine, and siphoning off the liquid. Their diet is made up primarily of hubba gourd, a fruit difficult for humans to digest. The name of which translats to "the staff of life."

To make their living, Jawas salvage, repair, and resell junk they find in the desert. Sometimes they even "find" items that haven't been lost. Jawas are proficient at repairing equipment. Jawa society is divided into clans or tribes. Once a year, all the Jawa clans meet at a giant swap meet in the great basin of the Dune Sea, where they trade items, share stories, and even barter sons and daughters as "marriage merchandise." The Jawa culture is centered on family. They take great pride in their clans. In fact, their language includes 43 different terms to describe relationship, lineage, and bloodline.

These immense steam powered vehicles were first brought to Tatooine by Corellian prospectors looking to mine the sands for valuable ore. When Tatooine metal proved to have no ore, the mines were shut down and the miners abandoned most of their equipment. The native Jawas reclaimed the crawler vehicles, turning them into an important part of their culture. If needed, an entire Jawa clan, numbering in the hundreds, can live inside a Sandcrawler. Their custom though, is for half of the clan to reside within rock-walled fortresses out in the desert while the other half forms the Sandcrawler crew. The interior of the Sandcrawler is a convoluted warren that befits the Jawas rodent origins. Much of it has been gutted and refitted to meet their needs.
